Focus on Hearing Loss. Part 1: The Invisible Disability is the first module in a course series developed to help nurses and caregivers become stronger advocates for the hearing health of patients, residents, and others entrusted with their care.

Group of people for the Focus on Hearing Loss course series

The series is broken into different modules that explore aspects of hearing, hearing loss, prevention, communication techniques, and treatment options to help improve the quality of care for patients and residents. The modules address several goals that will impact the affected individual, their families, caregivers, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and the environments in which they live. The goals aim to:

  1. Improve patient safety
  2. Improve patient and family satisfaction
  3. Increase overall awareness
  4. Reduce patient care costs

 A few of the topics covered in the first module include:

  • Hearing health (communication and connection)
  • Science of hearing (how we hear, anatomy, types of hearing loss)
  • Causes of hearing loss (conductive, sensorineural, mixed)

Objectives

  • Identify the role of nurses in the hearing health of their patients.
  • Describe the impact of hearing loss on speech and communication.
  • Differentiate among the three (3) causes of hearing loss.

Course features.This course features progress tracking, videos, interactive content, test yourself activities, hearing loss self-assessment, graphics, and an opportunity to participate in a real-life hearing loss simulation.

Certificate of completion. In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must complete all sections of the module, pass the exam with at least an 80%, and submit course feedback through an electronic evaluation form.
