Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect
Mandated Reporter Training for New York State
New York State Education Law requires select individuals, when applying initially for a professional license or teaching certification, to provide documentation of having completed two hours of coursework in the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment. This online course fulfills this mandatory one-time training requirement for all New York mandated reporters.

This activity is designed for all New York mandated reporters who include the following interprofessionals: physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physician assistants, specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, podiatrists, medical students and residents, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, school teachers, school psychologists, school administrators, and child care personnel.

At the conclusion of this activity the learner will be able to:
- Describe the history of protecting children and vulnerable populations.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of child abuse, maltreatment/neglect.
- Identify the legal responsibilities of the mandated reporter in New York.
- Demonstrate the role of the mandated reporter.
- Summarize the steps to report child abuse in New York.
- Identify resources for additional information about child abuse.

This self-guided enduring material takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Successful completion is achieved after scoring 80% or greater on the course exam.
